Many of the sub-areas with associated provisions were transferred directly from the national planning directive with the previous Municipal Plan. However, the municipal plan also contains a number of new or changed areas, including several K-areas. The intention has been to secure new opportunities for the development of the tourism industry in the open countryside. Other strategic efforts are linked to the development of renewable energy and various initiatives around experimental agriculture.
Some of the K-areas are abandoned settlements and existing cottage areas, while others are undeveloped areas. In general, Municipality Qeqertalik has many K-areas along the coast throughout Disko Bay. The K-areas include both cottage areas and summer house areas, where differentiated building options have been opened up. The changes mean that more modern building options have been given in several places, cf. the general provisions.
In addition to K-areas, the municipal plan includes L- and N-areas. The L-areas include existing recreational facilities – cabins and camp school, while N-areas include technical or infrastructural facilities. Specifically, two new hydroelectric power plants have been incorporated into the planning – respectively on Disko Island and at Kuussuup Tasia. The latter also includes an extensive pipeline route, which is subject to a 500 m buffer zone. The municipal plan also includes M-areas, in the form of dog islands and areas for experimental agriculture, as well as areas for processing fish and catch products, including cleaning and drying fish and meat.
The open areas are divided into three categories - O1, O2 and O3 areas - the latter being the Wilderness, where no municipally planned activities can take place that conflict with the primary use of the area - as O3. The O1 areas are a general buffer zone of 5 km, which is laid out around all sub-areas in the open country to ensure the necessary consideration of, among other things, the natural qualities and wildlife in the Wilderness. There are no O2 areas (extensive grazing) in the municipality.
In the planning for the individual sub-areas in the open countryside, emphasis has also been placed on ensuring consideration for nearby protected areas, cultural environments and similar conservation values. Among other things, the possibility is opened for special efforts in physical planning, which can, for example, promote quality, attraction value and accessibility to the individual areas.
