O: Reserved areas

Areas that are kept free are either characterized by being completely or almost completely devoid of buildings or structures. Hunting huts and survival huts can be established as long as the number is not to an extent that changes the overall use of the sub-areas as areas that are kept free.

The sub-area's general provisions can be seen below.

Provisions and sub-areas

The overall provisions for the individual sub-area are the basis for the municipality's issuance of land allocations and building permits.

General provisions

The general provisions apply to all sub-areas of the municipality in urban, rural and open countryside. The provisions are general and do not take into account the local conditions in the sub-areas.

Exceptionally, recreational cabins may be established in O areas, as long as the number and density of recreational cabins is not to an extent that changes the overall use of the sub-areas as open areas. In O areas, a minimum of 1000 meters must be ensured between each recreational cabin. Recreational cabins may also not be established within 1000 meters of K, L and N areas and of urban and rural areas.

The following applies to the different cabin types:

O-areas are divided into:

  • O1: undesignated areas
  • O2: areas designated for extensive grazing
  • O3: wilderness

O1: Undesignated areas

Undeveloped areas are characterized by being untouched or almost untouched and without buildings or structures. As a general rule, a sub-area is designated as an undeveloped area as a 5 km buffer zone around all interventions in the open countryside.

O2: Extensive grazing

Areas designated for extensive grazing are for grazing livestock, such as sheep, reindeer, horses, cows or the like, and where the land use is of an intensity that does not change the overall character of the sub-areas as areas that are kept free.

There are no areas designated for extensive grazing (O2) in Municipality Qeqertalik.

O3: Wilderness

Wilderness is untouched natural areas with a minimum distance of five kilometers from an intervention. An intervention can be:

  • Urban and rural areas.
  • Areas for holiday cottages and summer houses.
  • Areas of special recreational nature.
  • Areas designated for sheep farms, agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, dog islands, etc.
  • Areas for engineering and infrastructure, etc.

Paths and smaller corridors are not considered encroachments.
